My Favorite Decor

Moving into a new house can be exciting and overwhelming all at the same time. When our family moved, I walked into each room with a vision. I learned so much by decorating with the following tips:

How do you feel?
As the years pass by you have to slow down on purpose, and sometimes even remind yourself of what makes you happy. Recently, I have been paying attention to how things make me feel. When picking out wall colors for the living room I wanted white for calm, clean, and a sense of openness.
The rug chosen was an extension to the calm neutral colors. The only color I wanted in our living room were the pieces of art on the wall and couch pillows. I have black pillows with a classy gold stripe. Very bold and sophisticated.
While the other pillows are white with shades of blue with patterns. If I am feeling fancy and having people over I place all of the pillows on the couch. If I want a clean simple look I place only the black and gold pillows on the couch.
If I want some playfulness when hosting a party I place just the white and blue patterned pillows out. I love the changes I can make to a room with one simple modification. Just recently, during this summer I have placed all of the pillows on the fireplace. It is the perfect place to keep them out of the way but still on display.

Take a picture:
We often look in magazines or on social media of perfectly designed rooms. I found it very helpful to take pictures of the rooms I was decorating to help see how furniture was positioned, if there was too much going on and the room seemed cluttered, or if the all white room needed a little bit more character.
I had never thought I needed a fiddle fig tree but placing a little hint of green at just the right height was just what the room needed. When working with designers you can “try” various things before buying. Taking pictures can help you decide how to finalize those perfect touches.

Finding pieces that have meaning:
In our formal dining room I knew I wanted to have a horse theme. I wanted a vintage grand look. After searching online I decided to go to various stores to see what I could find before making a final decision. I ended up finding a picture of a horse in a simple frame and brought it home to try it out in the room. Was it a nice picture, I thought so. Did I like it, yes, but I wanted more.
I wanted meaning and something I loved so much that when I passed by it warmed my heart. I went back to the reason I wanted a horse theme in the first place. I loved riding horses when I was younger. I rode friend’s horses that became special to me and also owned my own horse. I remembered how those horses were bred and looked to see if I could find any art with the AQHA bloodlines from the horses I used to ride. Much to my surprise I was able to find a custom art picture of the stallions from my horse’s bloodline with their names displayed.
Combine the art with a beautiful custom frame, art lighting, and you have the perfect combination. Now passing by that wall I think about the amazing memories of coming home from school carrying my saddle down our hill every evening to ride. I now realize that was my favorite form of clearing my head and truly enjoying something. That feeling is everything to me. I encourage you to push through that chain store art and create something that will make your heart smile. It is also a great conversation piece when people come over.
